by Adeline Teoh Friday 29 May 2009 9:30 am
The MasterCard-U21Global scholarship program has launched, offering 20 scholarships to women working in the travel and tourism industry.
The scholarships will give 20 women in the region the opportunity to study in the U21Global Postgraduate Diploma of Business Administration. In 2008, three Australian women were among the scholars accepted under the program.
As women take on leadership roles within the travel and tourism industry, they can upgrade their skills and fast-track their career development through the MasterCard-U21Global scholarship program,” said Michelle Pilot, vice president of Brand Marketing for MasterCard Worldwide.
The program is intended for graduates who want to develop skills in the management and marketing of tourism and travel products and programs. Subjects include organisational Behaviour, Finance, Marketing Management and Strategic Management, as well as tourism-specific subjects like Service Quality in Travel and Tourism and Understanding the Tourism Consumer.
Travel and tourism organisations are now welcome to nominate female employees.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
i. The purpose of this paper is to assist the Africa Region to determine whether the Bank can play a more strategic role in tourism. Africa is recognized internationally for the quality of its resource endowment for tourism, and yet it has not managed to realize its full potential. This paper argues that, if African countries can better cater to consumer preferences in originating markets, tourism could have a strong impact on economic growth. Essentially a private activity, tourism is highly dependent on public support. Working within a comprehensive macroeconomic framework, governments will have to support tourism through improvements in policies and elimination of critical constraints. In parallel, the competitiveness of private tourism enterprises needs to be enhanced through better management, technology transfer and professional development. This illustrates the inter-dependent responsibilities of the public and private sectors for the success of the tourism sector.
